The cabinet format of about 11.5 x 16.5 cm was first used mainly for landscapes and from the mid-80s for portraits. It could never really replace or displace the Carte de Visite.The format was available in very different sizes.
From about 1910, the postcard became very popular and thus the Cabinet format lost finally its value in the population.
